Why Hunt Old Coins?
Your spare change jar might hide a tiny treasure worth thousands. Rare coins gain value from low mint numbers, historic mistakes, or famous owners. Last year, a 1969 dime sold for $500,000 because of a mint error. Collectors pay big for perfect condition and real proof of rarity. Start checking pockets, attics, and bank rolls – one lucky find can change everything.
1. 1913 Liberty Head Nickel
Only five exist. A car dealer once paid $3.7 million for one. Look for the Roman numeral V on the back and no mint mark. Most sit in museums, but dreams keep hunters searching.
2. 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coin
The government melted most after ending the gold standard. About 13 survived. One fetched $18.9 million in 2021. It shows Lady Liberty walking and a flying eagle. Illegal to own until 1990s court battles.
3. 1804 Silver Dollar
Called the “King of Coins,” mint workers struck these in 1834 as gifts. Eight known Class I versions. One sold for $7.68 million. Check for draped bust and small eagle reverse.
4. 1943 Copper Penny
Steel pennies ruled 1943 to save copper for war. A few bronze slipped out. Worth up to $1.7 million in top shape. Weigh it – copper is 3.11 grams, steel is lighter.
5. 1955 Double Die Lincoln Penny
Ink doubled on the date and words. Red uncirculated ones hit $125,000. Look with a magnifying glass for blurry “1955” and “Liberty.”
6. 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Penny
San Francisco mint error doubled Lincoln’s face and date. One graded MS-65 sold for $126,500. Rarer than the 1955 version.
7. 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar
Lowest mintage of the series – only 100,000 made. Perfect examples reach $550,000. Big silver dollar with Lady Liberty in cap.
8. 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
President Teddy Roosevelt wanted art on coins. High relief versions took nine strikes each. Wire rim copies sell for $300,000 plus.
9. 1870-S Seated Liberty Dollar
San Francisco mint opened and made maybe 12 of these. One traded for $2 million privately. Check for seated Liberty and “S” mint mark.
10. 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle
Came only in a 10th anniversary gold set. Mintage under 31,000. Mint state 70 coins now list at $80,000. Look for “W” under the eagle.
How to Cash In Safely
Grade matters more than rarity. Use PCGS or NGC for official slabs. Never clean coins – it drops value fast. Sell through big auction houses like Heritage or Stack’s Bowers. Keep records and photos. One dad in Texas found a 1943 copper penny in his father’s desk and paid off the house. Start small, learn marks, and enjoy the hunt – your next grocery change could be gold.
